New Dig Laws in Washington State

After three years and a great deal of input from stakeholders, the Washington Legislature passed E2SHB-1634, the Underground Utilities Damage Prevention Act, in 2011. The intent of the legislation was to build and improve upon the existing dig law by addressing federal standards along with eliminating outdated or poor practices.

The new law will go into effect January 1, 2013.

Starting Jan. 1, when damage occurs, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission must be notified of the incident via CGA’s Virtual DIRT tool.
